Nigeria@60: Lying Becomes a Presidential Addiction

Since assuming powers in the early summer of 2015, Mohammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s President, has almost by rote made lying a tradition at the annual independence day,October 1.

Last year, I took the time to catalogue the battery of lies Mr Buhari told in his pre-recorded speech. One of them particularly bears recalling if only because of prevailing circumstances.

“I remain confident that Nigerians will have affordable and uninterrupted electricity supply in the not too distant future.” –

I remember naming it Lie 3.

Only one year later, the price of stunted electricity supply has increased by more than 100%.

Now, let’s see some of the lies in this year’s speech. But permit me to name Lie 7 before others

Lie 7) “No government in the past did what we are doing..”Those in the previous Governments from 1999 – 2015 who presided over the near destruction of the country have now the impudence to attempt to criticize our efforts.”
Why I don’t I leave the reader to decide on the veracity or a lack thereof of the above ?

Lie1) “As President, I wish to renew my appreciation to Nigerians for entrusting me with your hopes and aspirations for a better and greater Nigeria.”

If the truth be told, the election that brought Mr Buhari in 2015 and 2019 are very contentious. No Nigerian now agrees to voting for him.

Lie 2) In justifying the draconian increase in the price of petroleum products, he made a most unfair comparison to Saudi Arabia. A developed country.
“Saudi Arabia changes N168 per litre. It makes no sense for oil to be cheaper in Nigeria than Saudi Arabia”.
Oh really ! What happened to all the campaign promises about bringing the price to N20 and how Jonathan was scamming Nigeria via subsidy payments ?

I hope Mr Buhari’s speech writers know that the minimum wage in Saudi Arabia is the reason its hospitals are manned by Nigerian doctors and nurses. I hope they know, too, that Saudi Arabia has world class schools, hospitals, roads, flourishing industries beyond oil, fat welfare package, free education among others.

If only Mr Buhari’s minders are not as ignorant as the president in not knowing that Saudi Arabia is a donor nation to the World Bank with the same voting blocks as Canada.

Lie 3)  That Nigeria has “youth population of about 400 miilion and  a general population exceeding 200 million”.
This is not true. Nigeria has never done an accurate census and none has been conducted in 5 years of Mr Buhari. People from Chad, Niger ,etc flood Nigeria. In short, Nigeria doesn’t know its own population. And this makes planning impossible.

Lie4).  “Lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years”.
Nigerians have been hearing this for years and they go deeper into abysmal poverty levels. Truth is that Nigeria is the poorest nation on earth and Mr Buhari has everything to do with it.

Lie5)  “Strengthening institutions to make them stronger in protecting National Interests”.
Remember Justice Walter Onnoghen,  the raid on the national assembly, and how all service chiefs are from Mr Buhari’s tribe and religion ? Remember also that Fulani Herdsmen are not terrorists but IPOB is?

And wait for this:
Lie 6) Imbibing tolerance in diversity to promote a peaceful, secure and united Nigeria”.
Only this week, Mr Buhari nominated a northern person to fill a vacancy which belongs to the South East. Some unity huh? And about peace and security? More people get killed daily in Nigeria than in any other country on earth!

Lie 8) “To make put Nigeria among the top 20 economies, yada, yada!”

Truth is that in 2014, Nigeria was already on that list even topping the UAE. It crashed due to the incompetence of the current administration.

Lie 8 and finally )
The recent elections in Edo state…were free and fair and shows that I am a believe in.….”.
Like they say in Edo, “If I hear”!
In that election, Mr Buhari’s hands were tied because of 3 reasons. The people were united against Adams Oshiomole, the PDP had an  awesomely intimidating team that made rigging impossible and foreign powers clipped the wings of would -be adventurers.

By the way, let’s see what happens in Ondo state.

Very finally,  I think those who write Mr Buhari’s speeches know that Nigerians don’t really care. Poor souls have given up a long time. Most of them neither listened nor read it. Like I said, they don’t care.
Too sad that “a man of integrity”could lie his way to power and sustain it through more lies.
To endure the hell that is today’s Nigeria, they developed an expression “I can’t kill myself “.
