Nothing can be strange to Nigerians again. They will watch TV, for those who have power, and see Japanese children holding a large banner with the inscription: “Mohammadu Buhari, Welcome to Japan”. They will also be told that he has gone to negotiate business deals. The real story is somewhat different.
As it gets more bizarre, Nnamdi Kanu, one of Nigeria’s blown fuses, ordered IPOB in Japan to “stone, harass and arrest” Buhari. They intend to “drag him to the Hague ” etc. And only last night, Nigeria’s media wrote : “Buhari ignores Kanu, jets out to Japan”. The statement warning Nigeria that their absentee president won’t be home, once again, was issued last week.
“Buhari had planned to depart Abuja, on Sunday for Japan to participate in the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) holding in the City of Yokohama, a statement by his media aide, Femi Adesina signed,”
This writer thinks that Mr Kanu is on the payroll of some convenient enemy and thus, ignores, like Buhari did, his orders.
But here is something that gets me interested though: The G7 Summit is being hosted by France’s Emmanuel Macron. And the date? August 24-26. And as Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan was airborne even at the time Mr Adesina gave his statement one or two questions came to mind.
Mr Abe will be busy with the leaders of United States, EU,France, Canada, Italy, Britain and Germany . And so, who will receive Mr Buhari in Japan? What does he do between today and 28th when the “Conference ” actually starts?
Isn’t a president meant to be one of the busiest people in his country?
Mr Femi Adesina knows his people (,Nigerians) very well. Suffering a fatal inability to question things, to see patterns, and thus easily deceived: He knows that they will not ask why he needs to be in Japan 3 days before a two-day event. They won’t bother about the cost implication. They are too worried about how to live till the next day. Others are too drunk on cheap spirits to care.
Where does this bovine, anything-goes collective ignorance come from? Well, when the “I -remain- loyal -sir” mentality was first developed. After that Nigerians began to put bread first and their sense of self and worth second. It has degenerated to a situation where principles don’t mean anything.
Incidentally, below is the reason ,ostensibly though ,I might theorize ,Mr Buhari flew to Japan.
“TICAD stands for Tokyo International Conference on African Development. The government of Japan has been leading this conference since 1993, co-hosted by United Nations, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Bank and African Union Commission (AUC). The next TICAD will be held on 28th – 30th August, 2019 at Pacifico Yokohama, Yokohama city, Japan.”
Nigerian media is already paid to “break” the news that Mr Buhari has arrived Japan. Those who care at all hope for a little drama, an episode ,at least ,to help them escape reality. By this,I mean that they actually anticipate an assault by IPOB. It won’t achieve anything but, again ,as a comic relief.
You’d think that Mr Buhari will stay home now that the nation is under attack. Domestic and foreign. About 80 of his citizens are in trouble in America for internet related fraud. 23 more will have their heads chopped off for drugs in Saudi Arabia. Back home ,his army is engrossed in a kidnapping and murder game with the police. And police stray bullets kill people daily. A truly bad horror movie.
On the economic scene? Nothing. What’s more, the idea is that Mr Buhari has stripped his deputy,Yemi Osibanjo, of all powers. In their first term, Mr Buhari used to refer people to him, being the “head of the economic team”. Now, their is no team, let alone a head.
As the the Yokohama thing won’t start until a good 2 days more, Mr Buhari, it would seem ,needs an escape from a hostage situation that Nigeria has become. And his men chose the location very carefully. In Japan, Mr Buhari will be very far from Donald Trump and Boris Johnson. For some reason!
The tragic thing is that when a president appears to be on the run from his own men, what hope is there left for the luckless citizens?
